Caren Marsh-Doll
Judy Garland Stand-In
Attendance Confirmed
Caren Marsh-Doll is an original MGM babe! The expanded second edition of her book, re-titled “Hollywood’s Babe—Dancing Through Oz” (BearManor Press) was released last year. A 1940’s Hollywood icon as Caren Marsh, she co-starred with Bob Steele in 1945’s “The Navajo Kid” and opposite Alan Ladd as Natalie in 1947’s “Wild Harvest” in addition to being featured as a dancer in scores of Hollywood musicals. Her very first film role was as a dancer in 1937’s “Rosalie” starring Eleanor Powell and Nelson Eddy. One of her most cherished memories is of being Judy Garland’s stand-in for MGM’s “The Wizard of Oz,” filmed at the end of 1938 and released in 1939.
Get a copy of her book, click your heels together and join Caren Marsh-Doll as she dances through her rich Hollywood life. Caren started dancing lessons at four, danced throughout her school years and, after graduating from Hollywood High, appeared in musicals working for such famous dance directors as Busby Berkeley, Nick Castle, Hermes Pan and Charles Walters. She later acted in movies and, during World War II, Caren was seen by more servicemen than any other actress in Hollywood when she starred in a movie made at Paramount for the U.S. Armed Forces called “Pick Up Girl.” Her telling of this incident in the book is hilarious!
Caren continued acting on screen, including many westerns, and on stage and then on to Broadway. The book is over 300 pages with photographs including Caren with Judy Garland during “The Wizard of Oz,” dancing in Busby Berkeley musicals and publicity stills from “The Navajo Kid” and other films. The expanded second edition has new chapters and even more photos than the first—some never before seen! Caren also appeared with such stars as Kirk Douglas, Orson Welles, James Stewart and Roy Rogers.
In 2009, she is still dancing at the age of 90 and remains the darling of Oz fans. Caren is thrilled to be invited back to downtown Chesterton and is looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new fans and friends.
